lake county michigan Lake County is considered by sportsman as having some of the finest trout streams in Michigan. The Pine, Little Manistee and Pere Marquette River’s all come through the area which were used to transport lumber during the late 1800’s. The City of Baldwin is the county seat and the resort community of Idlewild is a historic landmark, recently featured in a Hollywood film.

Almost half the county is made up of Federal Land and State Forest that attracts hunters, hikers, fisherman, skiers, snowmobilers, kayakers and canoists who come to enjoy the abundant trails and waterways.

The City of Baldwin is the County Seat with an economic base focused on tourist. Baldwin is located about 90 minutes north of Grand Rapids on Highway 37. Each spring Baldwin hosts a Blessing of the Bikes Festival which attracts thousands of motorcyclists from around the county and the Annual Troutarama Festival is held in July.

After WWII a group of African/American’s developed the resort community of Idlewild which thrived through the mid-1960’s. During it’s day, (prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964) Idlewild was a popular summer resort with a population that grew to almost 25,000 as people came to enjoy camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, roller skating and night-time entertainment.

Today, Idlewild hosts music, history and art’s festivals and events throughout the summer season.
